Infection control is everyone’s responsibility and as healthcare is delivered in a variety of settings, healthcare associated infections can therefore arise in a wide range of clinical conditions.

They can affect otherwise healthy individuals, especially if invasive procedures or devices are used and not only can patients of all ages be affected, their families, carers and other healthcare workers can also be affected.

Certain actions can be taken in order to reduce the risk of the spread of infection and this programme has been designed to offer a thorough understanding of the topic of Infection Control and its impact on both individuals and organisations.

Course Content

Unit 1 - Introduction to Infection Control in healthcare Environments

  • Infection and Colonisation
  • The types of micro-organism and examples of infections caused
  • The conditions which allow bacteria and fungi to grow
  • How organisms spread

Unit 2 - Personal healthcare and hygiene Procedures in healthcare Environments

  • Demonstrate and explain the requirements for personal hygiene and health checks prior to starting work
  • Demonstrate and state importance of correct dress and personal grooming
  • Carry out effective hand cleansing Procedures

Unit 3 - The Decontamination of healthcare Equipment and the Environment

  • Identify the Differences Between Cleaning, Disinfecting and Sterilising
  • Provide Evidence for Dealing with waste, sharps and spillages
  • Report Infection Risks Incidents
