Oxygen Therapy

Oxygen Therapy

Key information on Oxygen Therapy for those in healthcare and associated environments

Oxygen can be used for a variety of purposes within the medical treatment of both chronic and acute cases either in hospital, within pre-hospital settings or as part of entirely out of hospital care but will be dependent on each patient’s needs and the opinion of those medical professionals who are responsible for their care.

Oxygen is essential for cell metabolism and tissue oxygenation is similarly essential for all normal physiological functions, but in certain circumstances high blood and tissue levels of oxygen can be either helpful or damaging. This course has been designed to offer an appreciation of the key elements of Oxygen Therapy for those who may come across the use of oxygen within healthcare environments or in their roles as healthcare practitioners or nurses.

The course contains the following elements:

  • Oxygen therapy – overview and purpose
  • Oxygen as prescription – flow rate, delivery system, duration and monitoring
  • Critical and serious illnesses that may require oxygen therapy
  • Other conditions that may require oxygen therapy
  • Equipment – advantages, disadvantages and best practice
  • Methods of oxygen therapy delivery – high flow and optiflow
  • Oxygen saturation monitoring
  • Risks of oxygen therapy

In contrast to classes attended regarding child protection, this e-learning course was more in-depth, accessible, and compulsory engagement required due to test . Attended classes can have a passive attendance quality as there is no test, so that you can see people passing the time on their mobile phones!!

The e-learning course - the flow chart was useful for people like me (A&E junior nurse) as well as the case study. This will influence my practice.
