Diabetes is a metabolic condition in which a person has high blood sugar levels. It is estimated that 382 million people worldwide have the condition and 1.4 million people die each year, making it the 8th leading cause of death. This makes the condition an increasing concern within society both from an individual’s perspective and from the point of view of the costs of healthcare and the associated treatments.

Diabetes affects a similar ratio of males to females, with Type 2 diabetes making up approximately 90% of cases. The number of people suffering from the condition is predicted to rise worldwide to 592 million by 2035 and in the UK, statistics are similarly alarming. In addition to adults, an increasing number of children are being diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes and the overall figures for the items used or prescribed to treat the various forms of the condition now make up 9.3 per cent of the total cost of prescribing items within the NHS.

This course intends to raise awareness of the key information about diabetes, the types of diabetes and offers relevant information about how the condition can be controlled and monitored.
