Key information about dietary intake that is not supplemented by any other forms of feeding.

Parenteral feeding is the intravenous administration of nutrients and should be considered for all patients who are malnourished or at risk of malnutrition, have a non-functioning gastrointestinal (GI) tract or an inaccessible gastrointestinal (GI) tract that prevents enteral feeding. It can also be used for comatose patients.

Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN) is the process whereby feeding is not supplemented by any other forms of feeding, such as oral feeding or tube feeding making it the only means by which a person gets the nutrition they need.
