Managing and Safe Handling of Medicines in Community Settings

Managing and Safe Handling of Medicines in Community Settings

Comprehensive information about medication handling and administration for healthcare assistants

This Managing and Safe Handling of Medicines programme has been written for those healthcare assistants who work in community settings, such as care homes, nursing homes and in domiciliary (home) care settings. It has been divided into 3 broad stages that will deal primarily with the following:

  • An Introduction to Medicines in Healthcare Settings
  • Receiving, Storing and Disposing of Medicines in Healthcare Settings
  • Administering Medicines in Healthcare Settings

In the first stages, you will look at what medicines are and understand the different categories, types, and forms of medicines. You will also learn about the benefits and risks associated with medicines in your work setting and the legal roles and responsibilities of all those involved in supporting individuals with their medication.

In the next stages, you will look at the different sources from which medicines may be received in care settings (for example, prescriptions from the pharmacy), the importance of effective communication when receiving medicines and organisational policy and record keeping.

In the final stages you will cover legislation, guidelines and organisational policies for the administration of medicines. From these you will learn how to prepare to administer medicines, correct procedures and how to report and record the administration of medicines at work. In addition, your role as an employee will be considered to ensure that you work at all times within the constraints of health, safety, security and confidentiality. It will also ensure that you implement safe working practices when administering and assisting in the administration of medicines.
