Falls occur in all healthcare settings for a number of different reasons and not necessarily as a direct result of poor working practices.

A fall is nearly always due to one or more ‘risk factors’ and service users are more likely to be the victim of a fall if they are elderly, have limited mobility, experience muscle weakness or have another physiological and/or neurological impairment.

As a result, it is important that the right steps are taken to reduce the risks of falls in healthcare settings so that service users are not adversely affected, and as healthcare staff have a key role to play in falls prevention, this short course intends to highlight the key information and help to ensure individuals are in the best position to gain an appropriate level of understanding of the possible causes of falls and their consequences as well as appreciate the importance of basic risk assessment and falls prevention strategies.
