Understanding Epilepsy

Helping individuals to understand epilepsy as the appropriate responses can be critical.

In the UK, approximately 87 people each day are diagnosed with epilepsy and with an estimated total in excess of 500,000 people who have epilepsy, that makes the statistic 1 in every 100 people who have the condition and are likely to have seizures throughout their lifetime. For some, developing epilepsy can happen for no known reason and their doctor may not be able to explain why, whilst for others, where epilepsy occurs later in life, doctors may be able to find the cause more easily.

As a result, understanding the condition will not only help those people who suffer from epilepsy, but also those who may come into contact with someone who has the condition whether professionally or socially, as the appropriate responses can be critical. In this course, we also include information relevant to those working in educational environments.

This course therefore aims to consider the main factors that surround epilepsy, looking at the background to the condition, epilepsy itself, treatment and considerations when dealing with a person having a seizure.
